In 2000, Steve and his wife, Marie, retired to a farm just outside Atlanta with their three daughters and helped champion an effort to create the Chattahoochee Hills Country Alliance, as a means to address the growing concerns of urban sprawl. The alliance brought together landowners, developers and conservationists to find a mutually agreed upon solution for balanced growth.
In 2004, the Nygrens began development of Serenbe, a 1,000-acre sustainable living community, to demonstrate these concepts. To date, the success of the community has drawn national attention as an example of New Urbanism in the South.
